Emerging in my garden after a very long winter..

Emerging in my garden after a very long winter... this perennial was planted last year...

It can be used as a cut flower- typically comes in Blue, Lavender, Pink, White, even Red... and some flowers are bi-color...

This Double Variety... opens up further to reveal a central core of anthers... it is actually a relative of the Ranunculus...

Common name is "traveler's joy", "virgin's bower" "old man's beard"... "leather flower" or "vase vine"...
P.S. Whatever your common name... I call this garden beauty- Clematis!

What... Flower??

The Flower of St. John's Wart... we typically don't see this "flower" in bloom... but more over use it as a decorative "berry" in it's after-bloom life...

Unless you're fortunate enough to get this cut flower #americangrown from Mellano & Company or Sun Valley Flower Farms...

Forming "berries" in several different colors... this NEW Age "flower"... is grown around the world...

P.S. We call it "Hypericum"... and it's Stunning as a flower ... as well as a "berry"...

Flowers are Important...

Few people realize that Carnations are no longer grown in the USA...

Back in the 1970s... there were 174 Carnation Growers in the State of Colorado alone.. and hundreds of acres in California...

Last year... we discovered there was one Carnation grower still in operation- in California...

Sadly- they closed in December of 2014...

This week on our Final Episode of the CA Grown Experience... I share my quest for... and visit to America's Last Carnation Growers...

P.S. Flowers are Important... and these American Grown Carnations will be sorely missed...
