From the legume family... it's close relatives are the soybean
and dry peas...
Date back to Roman times where the seeds were also used
for food...
The garden species are renowned for their rainbow colors...
and large spike flowers...
"Good Neighbor" Garden Flowers... they increase the Nitrogen
in the soil for other garden flowers... which led to is name that means
"wolf-like...
Since they will grow in poor soil where no other flowers can
survive-- because of their nitrogen converting property... they
were felt to be "robbing the soil of nutrients"... and thus like a
"wolf robbing a sheep from the fold"...
In all actuality... they are exactly the opposite... creating valuable
nitrogen... and thus making bad soil even better...
They are also popular for their slightly sweet fragrance...
P.S. We call them "Lupine"... (pronounced "Loop-in") Arrroooooooo
